What is gongbi painting?

Chinese fine brush painting

Gongbi is a traditional Chinese painting style known for careful linework, controlled color, and refined detail. The word is often translated as fine brush painting. Compared with freer ink painting, gongbi asks the viewer to slow down and notice small forms: feathers, robes, flowers, cloud patterns, and the rhythm of a hand-drawn line.

Common subjects

Traditional gongbi subjects include birds and flowers, Buddhist figures, court scenes, animals, and symbolic plants such as lotus, peony, bamboo, and plum blossom. These subjects are often chosen for both beauty and meaning: care, clarity, purity, longevity, prosperity, or seasonal feeling.

How to choose a piece

For a quiet home interior, choose softer colors and open space. For a meaningful gift, choose a subject whose symbolism fits the occasion. A silk fan can feel intimate and collectible, while a framed painting works well as Chinese wall art for a living room, study, or meditation corner.
